Ağaçık argued that Deniz Göktaş is a representative of the tradition of humor and stated that the expressions used in the performance should be evaluated within the scope of critical humor, not insult.
Deniz Göktaş: "I Had No Intention of Offending Anyone"
In his defense statement in court, Deniz Göktaş stated that he had no intention of targeting any religious group.
Göktaş stated that his performances have included not only religious topics but also political views and public figures as subjects of humorous criticism, and that he had no intention of offending religious people.
Göktaş stated that he returned to Turkey of his own volition and also conveyed to the court that he had no intention of fleeing.

Speaking after the hearing, CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu stated that art and freedom of expression are cornerstones of democratic societies.
Kılıçdaroğlu stated that Göktaş came to Turkey of his own will and there was no suspicion of him fleeing, adding that it is not right for an artist to be arrested for their thoughts.
Kılıçdaroğlu emphasized that artists can be criticized, but art and humor should not be punished, and drew attention to the importance of protecting freedom of expression in a democratic rule of law.
