There has been a significant decrease in illegal entries into Germany in the first half of 2026. According to Federal Police data, the number of individuals entering the country without a valid passport or residence permit fell by 22% to 24,329 compared to the same period last year.
Data released by the German Federal Police shows a marked decrease in detected irregular entries during the January-June period of 2026 compared to previous years. Illegal entries, which were at higher levels in the same period of 2025, have shown a decline following the implementation of new border policies and increased controls.
June sees lowest level in recent years
According to Federal Police records, 3,290 illegal entries were detected in June 2026. This figure is notable as the lowest recorded for the month of June since 2021.
For comparison, 45,338 irregular entries were detected in Germany in the first six months of 2023. The latest data reveals a significant reduction in irregular migration movements towards Germany in recent years.
Germany expands border controls
Germany began implementing reintroduced border controls on all land borders starting September 16, 2024. Controls, previously conducted only in certain border regions, were later expanded to cover all of the country's land borders.
The federal government states that the primary objective of border controls is to prevent illegal entries, combat human trafficking, and enhance border security.
Pushbacks increased under Dobrindt
Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt, who took office in May 2025, issued new directives to the Federal Police aimed at tightening border controls and reducing unauthorized entries.
In this context, a policy of turning away individuals seeking to apply for asylum at the border, except under specific circumstances, has been implemented. However, sick individuals, pregnant women, and other vulnerable groups are excluded from this measure.
Over 53,000 unauthorized entries recorded
Since Federal Minister of the Interior Dobrindt took office, a total of 53,230 unauthorized entries have been recorded by the Federal Police.
Of these individuals, 38,804 were reportedly turned away at the border or during illegal transit. In the same period, 1,561 people were temporarily detained on suspicion of human trafficking.
According to experts, Germany's increased border controls, European migration policies, and cooperation with neighboring countries are among the main factors contributing to the decline in irregular migration figures.
