An explosive-laden unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was detected at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany on August 4, near a Ukrainian cargo plane. Following this development, the airport was closed to flights overnight and security measures were increased.
US intelligence claimed that the characteristics of the detected UAV were specific to Russian military intelligence GRU. An anonymous US intelligence source speaking to ABC News stated that the structure of the device and the explosives inside resembled those used by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of Russia (GRU).
The same source noted that this conclusion was reached in cooperation with German security and intelligence agencies. The source, claiming that the UAV did not explode due to a severed connection in its trigger mechanism, stated that a major disaster was thus prevented at the last minute.
