At Albrecht Dürer Airport in Nuremberg, Germany, buffalo have once again replaced lawnmowers this year. The buffalo named "Alma" and her companions in the herd are naturally clearing the green areas around the airport.

In an announcement made on the airport's Instagram account, it was stated that the water buffalo have started working again in the Bucher Landgraben area. The animals, weighing approximately 600 kilograms, are replacing heavy mowing machines in sensitive wetland areas, providing environmentally friendly maintenance.

The buffalo, which can move comfortably in wet meadows, soft ground, and swampy areas, do not sink into the mud thanks to their cloven hooves and are notable for being excellent swimmers. Thanks to these characteristics, while protecting the biotopes in Bucher Landgraben, they ensure that coastal areas remain open and provide habitats for many animal and plant species.

The group of buffalo led by Alma, the herd's leader, has become a focal point of interest for local residents and airport visitors this year, just as it did last year. It is observed that the buffalo, with planes taking off and landing behind them, are completely unaffected by the airport traffic.

Airport authorities issued important warnings to visitors coming to observe the buffalo. Visitors were asked not to feed, pet, or disturb the animals under any circumstances. It was emphasized that fences and electric wires should not be crossed, and it was reminded that while buffalo may appear docile, they are large and powerful farm animals. It was stated that the best observation distance is a safe distance.

The project, initiated in 2023, is being continued this year following successful results.
