A 19-year-old who was severely injured in a traffic accident in Kahramanmaraş was declared brain dead. The young man's donated organs offered hope to three patients awaiting transplants.
The young man had been in a traffic accident with his father on July 17. Health teams transported him to Kahramanmaraş Necip Fazıl City Hospital.
He was diagnosed with brain death today during his treatment in the intensive care unit.
Dr. Mehmet Ali Düzkale, Organ Transplant Coordinator at Necip Fazıl City Hospital, and hospital officials met with the family to discuss organ donation. With the family's consent, the organ transplant process began.
Dr. Aziz Bulut and his team from Gaziantep University Kahraman Eruslu Kidney Transplant Hospital arrived in Kahramanmaraş to retrieve the organs.
The liver and two kidneys were retrieved in an operation lasting approximately three hours. The liver was sent to Gaziantep University Kahraman Eruslu Kidney Transplant Hospital. One of the kidneys was delivered to Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University Health Practice and Research Hospital, and the other to Kayseri Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine Hospital. The organs offered hope to patients awaiting transplants.
Dr. Düzkale stated that the donated organs would offer hope for life to three patients.
Emphasizing the importance of organ donation, Dr. Düzkale used the following expressions: "After the diagnosis of brain death, we informed the family about the process. Our patient's family responded positively to this situation. The liver and 2 kidneys were retrieved in an operation lasting approximately 3 hours. Hopefully, these organs will help patients awaiting transplants find healing. I also thank our family for their valuable sacrifice."
Meanwhile, the young man's father continues to receive treatment at the hospital.
