Mayor Belit Onay, who was a candidate from the Green Party, won by a clear margin against Axel von der Ohe, the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), by receiving 61.5 percent of the votes in the second round of the Hannover mayoral elections. SPD candidate von der Ohe, on the other hand, received 38.5 percent of the votes.

Making a statement after his election victory, Onay expressed his satisfaction with the high level of support he received and said, "I am very happy to have received such great support."

He had also led in the first round

Nine candidates competed in the first round for the Hannover mayoral election.

In the first round held on September 13, Onay came first with 45.6 percent of the votes, while von der Ohe received 21.5 percent of the votes.

Since no candidate exceeded 50 percent in the first round, the two candidates with the most votes competed in the second round.

While voter turnout in the first round was 63.3 percent, the turnout rate dropped to 45 percent in the second round.

Belit Onay, who became the first politician of Turkish origin to be elected mayor in Germany in 2019, will serve for eight years in his second term.

With a legal regulation made in the state of Lower Saxony, the term of office for mayors had been extended to 8 years, effective 2026.
