Experts recommend that travelers adhere to basic security rules. Simple precautions taken make a significant contribution to the protection of personal data.

Fake Wi-Fi networks pose a significant risk

The hotel network being encrypted does not provide sufficient protection. Access information is often shared with many guests or easily learned.

Cybercriminals can create fake access points that resemble the hotel's real network. Passwords, photos, or payment information of users connecting to these networks, which bear names like “Hotel Free WiFi,” can be compromised. Malware can be installed on the device unnoticed, and this software can spread to other systems on the home network.

Mobile network should be preferred for banking transactions

ARAG IT experts recommend using a mobile data connection for sensitive transactions such as online banking and online shopping. Although this method consumes personal data allowance, it is more secure than public Wi-Fi networks.

If the hotel network is to be used, only encrypted websites with “https” in the address bar should be accessed. However, this measure alone does not provide comprehensive security.

Devices should be prepared before travel

Keeping operating systems and applications up to date closes known security vulnerabilities. Therefore, device updates should be completed before travel.

The automatic Wi-Fi connection feature on phones and computers should be turned off. This prevents the device from connecting to an insecure or fake network unnoticed.

After use, the connection to the hotel network should be manually disconnected. This prevents applications from transferring data in the background. To ensure connection to the correct network, the official network name should be obtained from hotel staff.

VPN provides additional security

It is recommended that those who regularly use sensitive online services while traveling use a virtual private network (VPN). A VPN encrypts all internet traffic and routes it through a protected connection. This makes it difficult for third parties to read or intercept data.
