The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has appointed a woman to the position of Director General for the first time in its history. Saadia Zahidi will take over the role on November 1, 2026, and will become the organization's ninth Director General. Zahidi will replace Willie Walsh, who will depart at the end of July.

With this appointment, IATA brings to its leadership a name with many years of experience in international economics and business. Zahidi served at the World Economic Forum for over 20 years. Most recently, she worked as Managing Director and a member of the Executive Board.

Extensive Experience in International Economics and Business

Zahidi founded and led the New Economy and Society Centre within the World Economic Forum. She also served on the United Nations Secretary-General's advisory panel on women's economic empowerment and the European Space Agency's (ESA) high-level advisory group.

Zahidi is the author of "Fifty Million Rising," a book that addresses the rising role of working women in Muslim societies. She holds a bachelor's degree from Smith College and master's degrees in international economics and public administration from the Graduate Institute and Harvard University.

Roberto Alvo, Chairman of the IATA Board of Governors and CEO of LATAM Airlines Group, expressed his satisfaction with the appointment. Alvo stated, "The Board of Governors is extremely pleased to appoint Saadia Zahidi as IATA Director General. Her successful leadership at the World Economic Forum will further strengthen IATA's role as the voice of the global airline industry."

Transition Process to Begin After Willie Walsh

Willie Walsh will step down from his position on July 31, 2026. Walsh served on the IATA Board of Governors between 2005 and 2018. He served as Chairman of the Board of Governors during the 2016-2017 term. Since 2021, he has led the organization as Director General. Throughout his nearly 40-year career, he has been one of the leading figures in the global aviation industry.

Until Zahidi takes office, Sandrine Le Borgne, IATA's Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President for Corporate Services, will lead the organization in an acting capacity. Zahidi will carry out her duties from IATA's headquarters in Geneva.
