The Gran Fondo Başkent Cycling Race will be held for the fifth time in Ankara on Sunday, August 23. Approximately 1,000 cyclists will take part in this event. The race will start at 08:00 from Bilkent Center. The event will feature two routes: a long one of approximately 100 kilometers and a short one of 50 kilometers.
Race Director and 78 Event General Manager Ömer Kafkas stated that they expect to host athletes from 40 to 42 cities and 15 to 20 countries in Ankara this year. Preparations for the event have been ongoing for approximately one year. Comprehensive measures have been taken in the areas of security, health, and traffic.
The Route to Stretch from Ankara into NatureThe race will start from Bilkent Center and proceed out of the city via Sabancı Boulevard and Hoşdere. After the first hour, roads in the city center are planned to be reopened to traffic.
Kafkas said, "In addition to the long route of approximately 100 kilometers, there will be a short route of around 50 kilometers. A total of around 1000 athletes will sweat it out on both routes this weekend." He noted that the route aims to showcase both the urban and natural aspects of Ankara.
Highlights Economic Impact of Sports TourismOrganizers view Gran Fondo Başkent as an event that contributes to Ankara's promotion and tourism economy. Participants coming from outside the city are expected to stay in 20 to 25 hotels.
Kafkas pointed out that major cities strengthen their international brand value with events such as marathons and cycling races. He stated that he believes Ankara can also increase its share in this area.
Kafkas said, "Sports tourism has reached a figure approaching 1 trillion dollars globally. The world is creating significant traffic with sports and trying to leverage its economic power." He stated that the organization contributes to the local economy through accommodation, gastronomy, and other expenditures within the city.
Aiming for Bigger EventsAfter Gran Fondo Başkent reached its fifth year, organizers aim to expand mass sports events in Ankara. Kafkas stated that they want to expand the program with marathons and various amateur sports organizations in the future. He used the phrase, "We want to shift gears."
According to Kafkas, similar organizations can be moved to different regions of Turkey, including Kars, Hakkari, and Van. This way, natural and cultural destinations can be promoted through sports tourism. Visual: © Image generated with artificial intelligence
