State parliament elections will be held in Sachsen-Anhalt on September 6, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on September 20, and also in Berlin.

Recent public opinion polls in the state of Sachsen-Anhalt revealed that the AfD is clearly the leading party.

According to research conducted by the public opinion research company Infratest dimap for some German media outlets, the AfD has 41% of the vote, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) 24%, the Left Party 10%, and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) 7%.

The AfD's vote share, particularly in Sachsen-Anhalt, reveals the party's strong position in eastern Germany.

Reports in the German press stated that AfD co-leader Alice Weidel said she believed her party would achieve a majority to form a government alone in Sachsen-Anhalt. AfD's state premier candidate Ulrich Siegmund also announced that he wants to win the election and take over the state administration.

As some German states prepare for state parliament elections, the rise of the far-right AfD, especially in the eastern states, has become one of the main topics of the election campaign.

AfD also leading in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

In the northeastern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the AfD ranks first with 36% of the vote, while state Premier Manuela Schwesig's party, the SPD, is in second place with 29%.

According to research commissioned from Infratest dimap by public broadcaster Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR), the Greens qualify to enter the state parliament with 5% of the vote. A coalition consisting of the SPD, the Left Party, and the Greens can also achieve a majority of seats.

Race more balanced in Berlin

In Berlin, however, the differences between parties are at a lower level ahead of the September 20 election.

According to BerlinTrend, an election survey published by public broadcaster Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB) to measure political trends and parties' vote shares in elections in Berlin, the Left Party is in first place with 22%. The CDU has 20%, the Greens 17%, the AfD 16%, and the SPD 12% of the vote.

Elections will also be a test for the government

The elections to be held in Sachsen-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Berlin constitute an important test not only for the political balances in the states but also for the CDU-SPD government led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
