The Turkish Community in Berlin-Brandenburg (TBB) expressed support for civil society organizations working for democracy, human rights, social justice, and social solidarity following the Sachsen-Anhalt state elections. The TBB called for the protection and support of associations and initiatives, especially those combating racism, right-wing extremism, and discrimination.

Making a statement after the Sachsen-Anhalt state elections, the Turkish Federation in Berlin-Brandenburg (TBB) announced its solidarity with civil society organizations, initiatives, and democratic actors working to defend democracy and human rights.

According to the TBB, the election results once again highlighted the importance of an independent and strong civil society for a democratic society. It was stated that organizations combating racism, right-wing extremism, discrimination, and human rights violations, and providing counseling and support to victims, play a crucial role in preserving the democratic social structure.

“Civil society is the backbone of democracy”

Ayşe Demir, Spokesperson for the TBB Board, stated that civil society organizations perform an indispensable function for democracy and that these organizations should not be left alone in the face of political pressure and intimidation attempts.

Demir said, “NGOs and civil society initiatives are the backbone of our democracy. They stand by people who experience racism and discrimination, and they create spaces for social participation and solidarity. Right now, they need our solidarity; not political attacks or intimidation attempts.”

Call to democratic parties: Civil society must be protected

The TBB also called on democratic political parties to protect and secure the work of civil society organizations in the long term.

The statement emphasized the need for reliable and sustainable funding, political support, and a clear and resolute stance against racist, inhumane attacks for civil society to continue its work.

Ayşe Demir stated that retreating is not a solution during periods when democratic structures are under pressure, and that individuals and organizations fighting for an open and pluralistic society should be strengthened.

“When democratic structures come under pressure, our response should not be to retreat. We must strengthen those who fight every day for an open, pluralistic, and solidary society,” said Demir, adding that the TBB will continue its solidarity with civil society organizations and democratic initiatives throughout Germany, especially in Sachsen-Anhalt.

TBB emphasizes strong democracy

The TBB emphasized that democratic societies are not only composed of political parties and state institutions but are strengthened by the active participation of civil society organizations, initiatives, and citizens.

The statement noted that supporting individuals and organizations that uphold democracy, oppose discrimination, and assume social responsibility is of great importance for preserving a pluralistic and solidary social structure in Germany.
