Detained at Istanbul Airport, Arrested

Deniz Göktaş was detained at Istanbul Airport as part of an investigation launched due to expressions he used in his stand-up show published on YouTube. Göktaş, who was referred to court by the prosecutor's office on charges of "insulting the President" and "publicly denigrating the religious values adopted by a segment of the public," was arrested by the court he appeared before and sent to prison.

High Turnout at Çağlayan Courthouse

Politicians, lawyers, artists, journalists, and many citizens attended the hearing held at Istanbul Çağlayan Courthouse.

CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu followed the hearing with his accompanying delegation, while many deputies and party representatives, including CHP Istanbul Deputy Suat Özçağdaş, were also present at the courthouse.

Support Demonstrations After Arrest Decision

Journalist Musa Ağaçık: "Strong Solidarity Was Demonstrated"

Journalist Musa Ağaçık, who followed the hearing, stated in his remarks in front of the courthouse that the solidarity witnessed was remarkable.

Ağaçık stated that they were at Çağlayan Courthouse to support Deniz Göktaş, and noted that despite such widely attended chanting in the courthouse corridors, no harsh intervention occurred for the first time.

Ağaçık, stating that human rights, press freedom, and freedom of expression are indispensable elements of democratic societies, said that societies where different ideas can be freely expressed would be stronger.

Ağaçık, arguing that Deniz Göktaş is a representative of the humor tradition, stated that the expressions used in the show should be considered within the scope of critical humor, not insult.

Deniz Göktaş: "I Had No Intention of Offending Anyone"

In his defense at court, Deniz Göktaş stated that he had no intention of targeting any faith group.

Göktaş stated that not only religious topics, but also political views and public figures were subjects of humorous criticism in his shows, and said that he had no intention of hurting religious people.

Göktaş stated that he returned to Turkey of his own free will, and also expressed before the court that he had no intention of fleeing.

Kılıçdaroğlu: "Art Cannot Be Silenced by Imprisonment"

CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, making statements after the hearing, said that art and freedom of expression are among the cornerstones of democratic societies.

Kılıçdaroğlu, stating that Göktaş came to Turkey of his own free will and there was no suspicion of him fleeing, expressed that it was not right to arrest an artist for their thoughts.

Kılıçdaroğlu, emphasizing that artists can be criticized but art and humor should not be punished, drew attention to the importance of protecting freedom of expression in a democratic state of law.

Journalists' Entry to Courthouse Becomes a Subject of Debate

Allegations that some journalists who wanted to follow the hearing were not admitted to the courthouse were also among the notable developments of the day.

Media members and some citizens, drawing attention to the public importance of the hearing, argued that the necessary facilities should be provided for journalists to perform their duties.
