Berlin State Premier Kai Wegner announced he will not run again as a candidate for state premier in the state parliament elections to be held on September 20.
Wegner, who was criticized for his management of the power outage crisis in January, spoke at a press conference in Berlin.
Wegner admitted to making communication errors after the power outage and apologized to Berliners.
Wegner said, "When I realized I couldn't reach people on issues important to them, there are consequences. Berliners and this city are more important than me."
Stating that he will not be a candidate for state premier in the elections to be held in September, Wegner noted that he would continue his duties until a new government is formed.
<Wegner, who is also the Chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Berlin State Organization, said that his party needs to quickly rally behind a new candidate and conduct an election campaign in unity.
What Happened
As a result of an attack on the power cables leading to the Lichterfelde Power Plant in Berlin on January 3, approximately 50,000 households and around 100,000 people in the southwest of the city were left without electricity. Power was restored to the region 5 days later.
Wegner's statements that he was working in his home office and making phone calls on January 3, when the power outage occurred, turned out to be untrue.
It was revealed that Wegner, who was criticized in the media for making mistakes in crisis management, played tennis on January 3, did not make phone calls, and made inconsistent statements.
