At first glance, 2027 does not appear very advantageous for employees in Germany in terms of public holidays. Both Labour Day, German Unity Day, Reformation Day, and both Christmas days fall on a weekend. Despite this, those who cleverly plan their annual leave days can get up to 54 days of continuous holiday by using 28 days of leave. This calculation is based on the 2027 holiday planning of the travel portal Urlaubsguru.

May is the most advantageous period

The most efficient leave plan is created by combining the Ascension Day (Christi Himmelfahrt) and Pentecost (Pfingsten) periods. Those who use a total of 13 days of leave between May 3-21 can take 23 days of continuous holiday between May 1-23. Since the summer holiday has not yet begun, this period offers an advantage for those who want to travel to calmer destinations and under more favorable conditions.

In the states of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland, where the public holiday of Fronleichnam (Corpus Christi) is celebrated, it is possible to take up to 30 days of continuous holiday by using 17 days of leave.

Easter and regional holidays also offer opportunities

Employees who use eight days of leave between March 22 and April 2 during the Easter period can obtain a total of 16 days of holiday.

In the states of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, and Saxony-Anhalt, a ten-day holiday can be planned with four days of leave, thanks to the Heilige Drei Könige (Three Kings' Day) holiday in January.

Early planning becomes even more crucial

In some states, it is also possible to create long weekends around International Women's Day, International Children's Day, All Saints' Day (Allerheiligen), and Repentance and Prayer Day (Buß- und Bettag).

Due to the Christmas holiday falling entirely on the weekend in 2027, classic bridge days remain quite limited. Therefore, for those who want to take a long holiday, early and strategic leave planning is more important than ever. Image: © AI-generated illustration
