German Chancellor Friedrich Merz signaled that he might make changes in the cabinet following the resignation of Jens Spahn, Chairman of the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) parliamentary group. It is believed that potential appointments could trigger a comprehensive reshuffle of duties within the federal government.

Speaking to German television channel ZDF, Merz, in response to a question about a cabinet revision, replied, “This could be an opportunity to re-evaluate the structure of the government.” However, he also emphasized several times that he used this statement hypothetically.

Referring to assessments that Parliamentary State Secretary Thorsten Frei is a strong candidate for the parliamentary group chairmanship, Merz said, “I don't know who declared him the strongest candidate. This is the first I've heard of it.”

Chancellor Merz wants the successor to Parliamentary Group Chairman Jens Spahn to be determined before he goes on his summer vacation, which is scheduled to begin at the end of the month. Merz noted that he would discuss this in party bodies in the coming days and present a proposal shortly. He added, “However, we are not under time pressure. The parliamentary group is currently able to continue its work.”

While political circles in Berlin are buzzing about Spahn's successor, Parliamentary State Secretary Thorsten Frei's name stands out as the strongest candidate. If Frei becomes the parliamentary group chairman, a new person will need to be appointed to his position in the Chancellery.

It is stated that CDU Secretary-General Carsten Linnemann and Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt are also among the potential candidates. If Dobrindt takes office, a new person will be required for the Interior Ministry.

In Germany, the candidate for the chairmanship of the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) parliamentary group is traditionally determined jointly by Friedrich Merz, Chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), and Markus Söder, Chairman of the Christian Social Union (CSU) Party.
