The data archive of US-based Spirit Airlines, which ceased operations in May, is being transferred to Google. Google acquired the airline's data with a $10 million bid in the liquidation auction.

Google outbid AI training platform Mercor's $7.5 million offer. As part of the sale, corporate and operational data generated during Spirit Airlines' operations will be transferred to Google.

Extensive data archive, from emails to flight operations

The acquired data includes emails, chat logs, customer complaints, and financial and accounting information. The airline's operational records, website analytics, and Free Spirit loyalty program data are also part of the agreement.

According to court conditions, Google will not be able to access directly identifiable personal information. Credit card information will also not be transferred to the company.

Before the data is delivered to Google, it will undergo a cleansing process by an independent third party, during which personal information will be extracted.

Google to use data in AI models

It was stated that Google will use this data set to develop its products and artificial intelligence models. The archive, consisting of Spirit Airlines' commercial activities spanning many years, offers comprehensive data on an airline's operations, from customer communication to financial processes and flight operations.

This sale demonstrates that, in addition to an bankrupt airline's aircraft, equipment, or other physical assets, the data accumulated over the years can also become an economically valuable asset during the liquidation process.
