Nemrut Caldera, one of Bitlis's significant natural assets, has been declared "Nemrut Caldera National Park" by Presidential Decree. With the decision published in the Official Gazette, the area bordering the districts of Tatvan, Ahlat, and Güroymak gained national park status.

This new status aims to protect the caldera's natural structure and biodiversity. Visitor movements will be managed more controllably. The region will be evaluated with a sustainable tourism approach. The decision is seen as an important step that will increase the visibility of Bitlis and the Van Lake region in nature tourism.

Nemrut Caldera, with its impressive volcanic landscape and Turkey's largest crater lake, is one of the region's prominent nature tourism spots. National park status will prevent uncontrolled use in the past. A new era will begin in visitor management and the protection of natural areas.

Erdoğan Özel, Founding Chairman of the Van Lake Activists Association, stated that they welcomed the decision. Özel said that Nemrut is an important natural asset not only for Bitlis but also on a universal scale.

"The caldera contains the world's second-largest crater lake, and it also encompasses our country's largest crater lake. It's a very special place. For this place to become a national park is extremely important both for opening it to tourism and for passing it on to future generations, because previously there was uncontrolled use. After being declared a national park, it will be used more controllably."

Nemrut Caldera's national park status will create new opportunities for nature walks, geotourism, and outdoor activities in the region. Promotional activities will be developed alongside conservation measures. This situation could contribute to Bitlis's tourism potential reaching wider audiences.

Özel reminded that as Van Lake Activists, they have been organizing festivals and walks for years to protect the region. Özel said, "This unique place will provide significant contributions to our region, our Bitlis, and our country in terms of tourism. It is in our hands to protect this place and leave it to future generations. We will continue to contribute in this regard."

Kenan Akın, Spokesperson for the Bitlis Nemrut Geopark Sports Club, also stated that they believe the decision will contribute to the region's tourism promotion.
