Illegal entries into Germany decreased by 22 percent in the first half of 2026. According to Federal Police data, the number of people entering the country without a valid passport or residence permit fell to 24,329.

Data from the German Federal Police Agency shows a significant decrease in the number of irregular entries detected in the January-June period of 2026 compared to previous years. New border policies and increased controls have led to a drop in illegal entries.

June at Lowest Level in Recent Years

According to Federal Police records, 3,290 illegal entries were detected in June 2026. This figure marks the lowest level recorded for June since 2021.

In comparison, 45,338 irregular entries were detected in Germany in the first six months of 2023. The latest data reveals a significant decrease in irregular migration movements towards Germany in recent years.

Germany Expands Border Controls

Germany reintroduced border controls across all its land borders starting September 16, 2024. Controls, previously conducted only in certain regions, were expanded to cover all of the country's land borders.

The federal government states that the primary purpose of border controls is to prevent illegal entries, combat human trafficking, and enhance border security.

Rejections Increased During Dobrindt's Tenure

Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, who took office in May 2025, issued new instructions to the Federal Police to tighten border controls and reduce unauthorized entries.

As part of this, a practice was implemented to turn back certain individuals seeking asylum at the border, except under specific conditions. However, sick individuals, pregnant women, and other vulnerable groups are exempt from this practice.

Over 53,000 Unauthorized Entries Recorded

Since Federal Interior Minister Dobrindt took office, a total of 53,230 unauthorized entries have been recorded by the Federal Police.

Of these individuals, 38,804 were reported to have been turned back at the border or during an illegal crossing. In the same period, 1,561 people were temporarily detained on suspicion of human trafficking.

According to experts, Germany's increased border controls, European migration policies, and cooperation with neighboring countries are among the main factors contributing to the decrease in irregular migration figures.
