The Global Journalists Council, in a statement issued on the occasion of July 24 Press Day, drew attention to the importance of the Journalism Professional Association Law for the future of the journalism profession and called for legal regulation to find solutions.
In the statement shared with the signature of KGK Chairman Mehmet Ali Dim, it was emphasized that journalists are struggling with economic difficulties, professional insecurity, new challenges brought by digitalization, information pollution, and disinformation within the changing media landscape. It was stated that comprehensive steps to protect the profession's dignity and guarantee journalists' rights have become inevitable.
Demand for a Strong Legal Framework for Journalism
The Council stated that the implementation of the Journalism Professional Association Law, which has been on the agenda for a long time, will make a significant contribution to raising professional standards and more effectively applying ethical principles. It was noted that this regulation, in addition to improving journalists' working conditions, will also strengthen society's right to access accurate and reliable information.
The statement included the assessment, "The enactment of the Journalism Professional Association Law will be one of the most significant developments for our profession. The real celebration for the press community will be experienced on the day this regulation comes into effect."
Press Martyrs Remembered
At the end of its July 24 Journalists and Press Day message, KGK congratulated all journalists who selflessly serve to accurately inform the public on their holiday. Press workers who lost their lives during their duties were also commemorated with mercy, gratitude, and respect.
Officials pointed out that a strong, independent, and ethically committed press structure is one of the indispensable elements of both the journalism profession and the democratic social order.
