Lion Cub Euthanized at Nuremberg Zoo

A severely injured Asian lion cub at Nuremberg Zoo was euthanized after veterinary examination revealed no chance of recovery.

According to a statement from the zoo management, the incident occurred on Wednesday between male lion Kiron and the cub. Such bites from adult male lions towards cubs are generally considered disciplinary behavior. However, this time, the bite caused irreversible damage to the cub's spine.

Spine Severely Damaged

Following the incident, the injured cub was separated from its mother and siblings, sedated, and underwent a detailed veterinary examination. The examination revealed severe spinal injuries and complete paralysis of its hind legs.

Veterinary teams decided to euthanize the cub to prevent its suffering, as the injury was untreatable.

Zoo officials emphasized that the incident was not due to aggressive behavior, but was entirely an unfortunate accident.

Pride Resumed Natural Behavior

Officials stated that after the euthanasia, other lions were allowed to see and smell the deceased cub. The statement added that the pride later resumed its normal behavior and continued to live harmoniously. Subsequently, all lions were returned to their enclosures.

Born After Christmas

The deceased cub was one of six Asian lion cubs born at Nuremberg Zoo on December 26, the day after Christmas. Mother lion Aarany had given birth to six cubs; one died immediately after birth, and another a few days later. With this latest incident, the number of surviving cubs from this litter has dropped to three.

Officials reported that the remaining cubs are in good health and continue their development under regular veterinary supervision.
