A Lufthansa Airbus A380 struck the runway edge lighting system during its landing at Munich Airport from San Francisco. 351 passengers were safely evacuated in the incident. The German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) has launched an inquiry.

Lufthansa stated that the BFU has initiated an investigation and that the company is providing full support to the inquiry. BFU teams arrived at the airport and took possession of the aircraft's flight recorders for examination.

It was reported that the approximately 13-year-old Airbus A380, arriving from San Francisco, failed to maintain the runway centerline precisely during landing and consequently struck the lighting. The exact cause of the incident has not yet been disclosed.

Two days prior, a Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787 Dreamliner had also experienced a serious incident on the same runway during takeoff. The aircraft proceeded to the end of the runway, then returned to the airport, bursting some of its tires during a safe landing.

The preliminary investigation report regarding the Vietnam Airlines incident stated that a technical issue with the aircraft's acceleration was one of the possible causes of the near-miss.

Following these two incidents occurring in quick succession at Munich Airport, the results of the investigation into the Lufthansa A380's landing are eagerly awaited.
