Green Party candidate Belit Onay received 61.5 percent of the votes in the second round of the Hannover Metropolitan Mayoral elections. Onay won by a clear margin, leaving Social Democratic Party (SPD) candidate Axel von der Ohe behind. Von der Ohe, on the other hand, secured 38.5 percent of the votes.

Making a statement after his election victory, Onay expressed his satisfaction with the strong support. Onay stated, "I am very happy to have received such great support."

He also came first in the first round

Nine candidates competed in the first round for the Hannover Metropolitan Mayoral position.

In the first round on September 13, Onay came first with 45.6 percent of the votes. Von der Ohe received 21.5 percent of the votes.

No candidate exceeded 50 percent in the first round. Therefore, the two candidates with the most votes competed in the second round.

Voter turnout in the first round was recorded as 63.3 percent. In the second round, the turnout rate dropped to 45 percent.

Belit Onay became the first politician of Turkish origin to be elected metropolitan mayor in Germany in 2019. Onay will serve for eight years in his second term.

With a legal regulation made in the state of Lower Saxony, the term of office for metropolitan mayors was extended to 8 years in 2026.
