Cem Özdemir, the Green Party's Baden-Württemberg State Premier in Germany, warned against a possible coalition between the Greens and The Left Party in Berlin. Özdemir stated that The Left Party must take a clearer stance in the fight against antisemitism within the party.

In his assessment to Politico, Özdemir argued that forming a coalition with The Left Party in Berlin would not be appropriate.

Özdemir also expressed the view that The Left Party should be treated similarly to how the Alternative for Germany Party (AfD) is treated, especially regarding antisemitism.

Özdemir argued that some recent statements from The Left Party's Berlin branch were not exceptions, stating, “The words we hear there are not isolated slips.”

Özdemir stated that a distinction must be made between antisemitism and legitimate criticism of the Israeli government.

Özdemir, arguing that he himself sharply criticizes human rights violations in the Gaza Strip and Israel's settlement policy in the West Bank, said that Israel's right to exist cannot be questioned.

Özdemir said, "This has nothing to do with questioning Israel's right to exist and Jews in Neukölln being afraid to walk in the street with a kippah. This situation is unacceptable in the capital, which is the calling card of the Federal Republic of Germany, and (The Left Party) should not be allowed to approach power."

Özdemir specifically emphasized that his statements were not directed at Elif Eralp, The Left Party's state premier candidate for Berlin.

"I believe her on this matter," said Özdemir, stating that he did not know Eralp and believed she distanced herself from antisemitism.

However, regarding Eralp's control over The Left Party's Berlin branch, Özdemir commented, "Whether she controls the party and can guarantee that all its members, deputies, and future senators will share the same view is a big question mark."
