At Albrecht Dürer Airport in Nuremberg, Germany, buffalo have once again replaced lawnmowers this year. The buffalo named "Alma" and her companions in the herd are clearing the green areas around the airport using natural methods.

According to an announcement made on the airport's Instagram account, the water buffalo have resumed their duties in the Bucher Landgraben area. These animals, weighing approximately 600 kilograms, provide eco-friendly maintenance by replacing heavy mowing machines in sensitive wetlands.

Buffalo can move comfortably in wet meadows, soft ground, and marshy areas. Thanks to their cloven hooves, they don't sink into the mud, and they are notable for being excellent swimmers. With these characteristics, they protect the biotopes in Bucher Landgraben, ensuring that riparian zones remain open and providing habitats for many animal and plant species.

The group of buffalo, led by the herd's leader Alma, has once again become a focal point for local residents and airport visitors this year, just as they were last year. It is observed that the buffalo, located in the area where planes take off and land, are completely unaffected by airport traffic.

Airport authorities issued important warnings to visitors who came to observe the buffalo. Visitors were asked not to feed, pet, or disturb the animals under any circumstances. It was emphasized that fences and electric wires should not be crossed. Authorities reminded that although the buffalo may appear docile, they are large and powerful farm animals. The best observation distance was stated to be a safe distance.

The project, initiated in 2023, continues this year following successful results.
