AfD Wins Saxony-Anhalt Election, No Solo Power

According to the provisional official results announced by the state election commission, the AfD came in first with a clear lead, receiving 43.8% of the votes.

The AfD recorded its strongest result in a state parliament election, receiving more than double its 20.8% vote share from the 2021 election.

The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) lost 19.9 points compared to 2021, becoming the second party with 17.2% of the vote.

The Social Democratic Party (SPD), which increased its vote by 0.9 points compared to the previous election, came in third with 9.3%.

The Green Party came in fourth with 8.9% of the vote, while The Left Party, whose vote share decreased by 2.4 points compared to the last election, came in fifth with 8.6%.

The Social Justice and Economic Understanding Alliance (BSW) secured entry into the parliament by receiving 5.3% of the vote.

The Free Democratic Party (FDP) lost 3.8 points, receiving 2.6% of the vote, and failed to cross the 5% threshold.

As all other major parties have refused to form a coalition with the AfD, the result points to political uncertainty and lengthy negotiations regarding government formation.

Ulrich Siegmund, the AfD's candidate for state premier, stated on ARD television, "We achieved exactly what we aimed for. We made history in this country."

When asked what would happen if no partner could be found to form a coalition, Siegmund replied, "If necessary, new elections will be held."

According to the provisional official results, in the 83-seat state parliament, the AfD will be represented by 39 deputies, the CDU by 15, the SPD, Greens, and The Left Party by 8 each, and the BSW by 5.

In the state parliament, where 42 seats are required to form a government, the AfD fell 3 seats short of a sole majority.

For a majority government to be formed without the AfD, the CDU, SPD, Greens, The Left Party, and BSW must all join a coalition.

Voter turnout in the state, where 1.7 million voters were eligible to cast ballots, was 77.8%.
