Berlin is implementing a project that will provide a solution to the housing problem of young people undergoing vocational training. The apprentice (Azubi) dormitory, which will be operated by the municipality for the first time in the city, will open its doors in August. In the modern facility built at Storkower Straße 220 in the Lichtenberg district, 154 apprentices will have the opportunity to stay in affordable and furnished apartments.

The monthly rent, set at 340 euros, will include heating, electricity, and all ancillary costs. The rent amount was determined based on approximately one-third of the median value of apprentice salaries in Germany.

Modern Living Spaces Offered to Young People

In the new dormitory, students will stay in fully equipped two-person shared apartments (WG). The building also features common areas such as a learning lounge, a rooftop terrace, a bicycle workshop, and a laundry center.

It was stated that there is great interest in the project, with approximately 1,200 applications received for only 154 available spots. This high demand once again highlighted the need for affordable housing for young people undergoing vocational training in Berlin.

The first public apprentice dormitory was implemented in cooperation with Berlin's public real estate company Berlinovo and GSE (Gesellschaft für Stadtentwicklung). The project is also considered an important step for the Azubiwerk, which is planned to be established in the future.

Cansel Kızıltepe, Berlin State Senator for Labor, emphasized in her statement regarding the project that it is of great importance for young people undergoing vocational training to have suitable living conditions.

Kızıltepe stated that room rents of 600 euros and above per month are unaffordable for many apprentices in Berlin, and that public housing at 340 euros per month demonstrates that affordable housing production can be achieved quickly and without bureaucratic hurdles.

Berlinovo: We Offer Young People Not Just Housing, But Living Spaces

Alf Aleithe, General Manager of Berlinovo, stated that as a strategic partner of the state of Berlin, the company creates high-quality and economical living spaces suitable for the needs of young people.

Aleithe noted that the new residences were designed with a sustainable, functional, and social interaction-supporting approach, stating that their goal is not only to provide shelter but also to create a strong social environment where young people can live together.

GSE: Supporting Young People's Transition to Independent Living

Philipp Strohm, General Manager of GSE, pointed out that access to the first independent housing is of fundamental importance for young people's participation in social life. Strohm stated that the project will contribute to young people making a strong start in their professional lives by providing a safe, accessible, and affordable living opportunity.

No Guarantor or Deposit Required

Berlin's Azubiwohnen program was designed on a low-bureaucracy basis to ensure easy access to housing for young people.

During the application process:

  • No deposit is required.
  • No guarantor is required.
  • Paperwork is kept to a minimum.
  • The rental agreement covers the duration of the training and the transition period after graduation.

In addition, educational and counseling services will be offered to students.

Lottery and Point System to Be Applied for Placement

Due to the high number of applications exceeding the available capacity, placement will be carried out in two stages.

  • 70% of the spots will be allocated through a lottery system to ensure equal opportunity for all applicants.
  • The remaining 30% will be reserved for applicants with difficult housing conditions, low income, or those commuting long distances, using a point-based system.

More New Dormitories on the Way

The Berlin administration plans to open 100 to 150 more new housing units by 2027 to meet the increasing demand. Furthermore, preparations are reportedly underway for the construction of a new public apprentice dormitory for 150 people.
