Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Dr. İsmail Baloğlu, who has successfully practiced medicine in Germany for approximately half a century, was honored with the Bavarian Order of Merit, one of the most prestigious awards of the State of Bavaria, for his outstanding services in the field of health and his contributions to social and cultural relations between Turkey and Germany.
At the magnificent ceremony held at the historic Residenz Palace in Munich, the order was presented to Dr. Baloğlu by Bavarian State Premier Dr. Markus Söder. The ceremony was attended by his wife Gabriele Baloğlu, his children Renan, Selin, and Volkan Baloğlu, as well as representatives from politics, academia, healthcare, and civil society.
Markus Söder: "An Exemplary Figure for Society"
Speaking at the ceremony, Bavarian Premier Dr. Markus Söder stated that the Bavarian Order of Merit is awarded to individuals who serve as role models for society, distinguished by their achievements and sacrifices.
Söder emphasized that Dr. İsmail Baloğlu has been an important figure in Nuremberg for many years, not only as a successful doctor but also strengthening social solidarity through his volunteer work.
Significant Contribution to Turkish-German Friendship
At the ceremony, Dr. Baloğlu's many years of work in the German-Turkish Medical Association, the strong bonds he forged between people from different cultures, and his contributions to the development of Turkey-Germany relations were particularly acknowledged.
It was also stated that his efforts to strengthen the sister city relations between Nuremberg and Antalya played a significant role in the awarding of the honor.
A Career Full of Achievements
Dr. İsmail Baloğlu has been deemed worthy of many important awards throughout his career. Previously;
- Presidential Medal of Merit in 2003,
- Bavarian State Medal of Honor in 2010,
- Nuremberg Citizenship Medal of Honor in 2024
The successful physician, previously honored with these awards, has now been awarded one of Bavaria's highest orders.

In statements made after the ceremony, Dr. İsmail Baloğlu stated that he came to Germany in 1977 through the Goethe Institute to learn German, and decided to stay in Germany after accepting an attractive job offer due to the doctor shortage in the country at that time.
Baloğlu, stating that he has been practicing medicine for approximately 50 years, mentioned that he served as chief physician and deputy chief physician in various hospitals throughout his professional life, and always considered contributing to the development of Turkish-German friendship among his priorities during this period.
Baloğlu said, "Being honored with the Bavarian Order of Merit is a great source of pride and happiness for me. I thank everyone who deemed me worthy of this meaningful award."
Became the Doctor of Famous Figures
Stating that he considers Nuremberg his second homeland, Dr. Baloğlu mentioned that throughout his professional life, he also served as the doctor for figures well-known to the Turkish community, such as Alparslan Türkeş, former Minister of State Esat Kıratlıoğlu, high-ranking state officials, and many famous athletes who played in major European football leagues.
