On the anniversary of the July 15 coup attempt, the Consulate General of the Republic of Turkey in Nuremberg is organizing a commemoration program. During the program, democracy martyrs will be remembered, and veterans will be honored.

The event will take place on July 15 at 3:00 PM at Paul-Metz-Halle (90513 Zirndorf). As part of the program, the documentary "Korkma Oğlum," which focuses on the life of Serhat Önder from Nuremberg, who was martyred in Ankara on the night of July 15, will be screened.

Serhat Önder, who participated in the democracy vigil against the coup attempt in Ankara on the night of July 15, 2016, and was martyred in front of the General Staff Headquarters, is known by the Turkish community in Germany.

Önder, one of the founding members of the Union of International Democrats (UID) Nuremberg, went with his family to the General Staff Headquarters that night, wanting to protect democracy. Serhat Önder, who expressed his determination to those around him with the words, "We will strive to prevent the coup from happening, we will make our presence felt," had his words "Don't be afraid, my son" etched into memory, spoken to his son who was scared during the low-altitude flight of warplanes. He was martyred shortly after as a result of gunfire.

Serhat Önder, born and raised in Germany, was involved in civil society activities in Nuremberg for many years. Önder, who later settled in Turkey, lost his life on the night of July 15 while defending democracy. Martyr Serhat Önder was laid to rest in Bakırlı village, part of the Şabanözü district of Çankırı, his hometown.

The commemoration program, organized by the Nuremberg Consulate General, aims to bring together the Turkish community in Germany to remember the July 15 martyrs and to pass on the awareness of democracy to future generations.
