The Turkish Community in Berlin-Brandenburg (TBB) expressed support for civil society organizations after the Sachsen-Anhalt state elections. TBB called for the protection of associations fighting racism, right-wing extremism, and discrimination.

In a statement made after the elections, TBB stated its solidarity with civil society organizations and democratic actors defending democracy and human rights.

According to TBB, the election results showed the importance of a strong civil society for a democratic society. It was noted that organizations fighting racism, right-wing extremism, and discrimination, and supporting victims, play a critical role in protecting the democratic structure.

“Civil society is the backbone of democracy”

TBB Management Spokesperson Ayşe Demir stated that civil society organizations are indispensable for democracy. Demir emphasized that these organizations should not be left alone in the face of political pressure and intimidation attempts.

Demir noted the following in her statement: “NGOs and civil society initiatives are the backbone of our democracy. They stand by people who are subjected to racism and discrimination, and they create spaces for social participation and solidarity. Right now, they need our solidarity; not political attacks or intimidation attempts.”

Call to Democratic Parties: Civil Society Must Be Protected

TBB also called on democratic political parties to protect the work of civil society organizations and secure it in the long term.

The statement emphasized that for civil society to continue its work, reliable and sustainable funding, political support, and a resolute stance against racist attacks are necessary.

Ayşe Demir stated that retreating is not a solution when democratic structures are under pressure. Demir expressed that individuals and organizations fighting for an open and pluralistic society must be strengthened.

Demir said, “When democratic structures come under pressure, our response should not be to retreat. We must strengthen those who fight every day for an open, pluralistic, and solidary society.” It was noted that TBB will continue its solidarity with civil society organizations and democratic initiatives throughout Germany, especially in Sachsen-Anhalt.

TBB Emphasizes Strong Democracy

TBB emphasized that democratic societies are not only composed of political parties and state institutions. It stated that they are strengthened by the active participation of civil society organizations, initiatives, and citizens.

The statement highlighted the importance of supporting individuals and organizations that uphold democracy, oppose discrimination, and undertake social responsibility. It was stated that this support is critical for preserving a pluralistic and solidary social structure in Germany.
