Eylül Uyar, a student at Kabataş Boys' High School, who ranked first in Turkey in the German section of the Foreign Language Test (YDT) of the Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS), stated that consistent study played an important role in her success. Uyar also ranked 558th in Turkey in the YKS quantitative score type.
In a statement to an AA correspondent, Uyar explained that she learned the exam results were announced at 6:00 AM when her cat woke her up.
Uyar, stating she was very happy to see the result, used the expressions, "I was a little surprised. I didn't expect to be first in German, although it had gone well. So, I was happy."
Uyar stated that her success in German was the result of a process spanning many years. She noted that she had received German education from the preparatory class at her school and had intensively prepared for the language diploma exam in the 12th grade.
Uyar explained that she participated in an exchange program in Erlangen, Germany, in the 10th grade, and used the expressions, "I stayed with a German family there and only spoke German with them. This was very good for me."
Uyar, stating that the German debate competition she participated in last year also made a significant contribution to her language development, said, "I came first in Turkey. After that, I went to the European finals in Berlin. In the European finals, there were 34 participants from 17 countries, and I came second. I think the German debate, in particular, contributed a lot to my German. Because I really learned how to do argumentation in German."
Uyar, stating that she did not make special preparations for the YDT, continued her words as follows: "In this way, I had actually studied German for myself. I didn't do any specific study for the German part of the YDT. For the remaining part, the quantitative section and TYT, I started studying more in the 11th grade and studied consistently. I didn't make an overly intense schedule for myself, but I studied regularly. I would do whatever I felt like studying at that moment. I finished the topics first. I solved many practice exams. In the last few months, I was only solving practice exams. That's how I did topic reviews."
Uyar attributed her 558th place in Turkey in the quantitative score type to a solid foundation and consistent study. She said, "I think my foundation was good. My grades were good in preparatory, 9th, and 10th grades. Since I've been studying consistently since 11th grade, I didn't have many problems."
Uyar, stating that she has not yet made a final decision regarding her university and major choices, said, "I'm not entirely sure about the major or the university yet. So, I can't state a very clear goal. We'll see during the process."
Uyar pointed out that exam preparation is a process that varies from person to person. She said, "I think this is a very individual process for everyone. First, one needs to analyze their own situation well. Everyone should study according to their own situation, thoroughly analyze their practice exams, and act accordingly."
Uyar, stating that not everyone has the same opportunities, continued her words as follows: "I don't think I'm in a position to preach much to people beyond 'study consistently.' Because, at the same time, not everyone has the same opportunities as me. I had a good study area, my books. I could solve from PDFs thanks to my iPad, but not everyone has these opportunities. Sometimes people don't have a place to study. This is harder for people who don't have money."
Uyar, stating that there are families who create difficulties for girls who want to continue their education, and that this situation negatively affects them, used the expressions, "I am especially happy to have achieved something like this as a girl. Because girls don't always have such opportunities, and I am happy to be a representative of this right now. I hope our country and the world, in general, reach a point where girls also have equal opportunities."
