A gun attack occurred in Brussels' Saint-Gilles district around 02:40 AM. One person injured in the attack was hospitalized. Police reported that two suspects were taken into custody. This was the fourth gun attack in the city in the last four days.

Police station also targeted

Previously, on the evening of August 21, a police station in Brussels' Anderlecht district was fired upon with a long-barreled weapon. The Brussels South Police Zone noted that there were no deaths or injuries in the attack, but numerous bullet marks were found on the facade of the police station.

Another gun attack occurred in Saint-Gilles on August 22. District Mayor Jean Spinette announced that one person was injured in the leg and was not in life-threatening condition. Spinette stated that the attack might be linked to drug trafficking and that the investigation is ongoing.

Yesterday morning, around 07:00 AM, another shooting incident occurred in the same district. No one was killed or injured by the bullet that hit a house window.

Drug-related violence in Europe's political heart

Brussels, home to European Union (EU) institutions, has been facing increasing security problems in recent years due to drug trafficking and gang rivalries.

The Port of Antwerp, one of Europe's major gateways, is a primary hub for cocaine shipments from Latin America. Authorities state that a large portion of the drugs entering the country are distributed through networks in and around Brussels.

Deadly rivalries among criminal organizations in the capital have become a main agenda item for security forces.

Belgian police had recorded 96 gun attacks in Brussels in 2025, most of them linked to drug trafficking. Eight people had lost their lives in these incidents.
