The results of a YouGov poll conducted for the German Press Agency (DPA) between August 14-17 have been announced. According to the survey, which involved 2,091 participants, 36 percent of respondents believe Prime Minister Friedrich Merz will continue in his role this year but will resign before the legislative term ends, meaning before 2029.

Furthermore, 18 percent of poll participants stated they expect Merz to resign within this year.

The proportion of those who believe Merz will remain in office until the next elections in 2029 was 29 percent. 17 percent of participants did not express an opinion on the matter.

In July, personnel changes were made in the cabinet, the parliamentary group of the Christian Union (CDU/CSU) parties, and the CDU leadership. When asked whether these changes increased Merz's authority within the party, 36 percent of participants stated that they "significantly" reduced his authority. 31 percent indicated that they reduced it "somewhat."

Only 1 percent believed the changes "significantly" increased Merz's authority. 5 percent stated that they increased his authority "somewhat." 19 percent of participants indicated that these personnel changes neither increased nor decreased Merz's authority.
