Friedrich Merz spoke at a joint press conference after the High-Level European Arctic Summit in Rovaniemi, Finland. Merz stated that Europe's security and freedom are directly linked to the outcome of the war in Ukraine.

Merz stated, “If Russia succeeds, this will have unpredictable and unprecedented consequences for all of us, including Germany.”

The German Chancellor emphasized that he is therefore taking a very firm and clear stance, and has no intention of backing down even an inch.

Merz noted that providing all possible support to Ukraine is a "historical duty" to preserve peace and freedom in Europe.

Merz stated that Russia is not only waging war against Ukraine, but Moscow is also conducting hybrid attacks and influence operations targeting European countries.

Merz responded to a question about the strengthening opposition to support for Ukraine in European countries. He underlined that the war has entered a critical phase.

The German Chancellor said, "Most likely, the most decisive moments, perhaps weeks or months, await us in defending the freedom and peace of our continent."

Merz stated that he is aware of the criticisms regarding the continuation of military and financial support to Ukraine. He noted that these discussions are taking place not only in Germany but also across the European Union.

Despite this, Merz emphasized that continued support for Ukraine is in the security interest not only of Kyiv but also of Europe.

Merz said, "I will do everything I can to continue our support and convince people that this is in our own interest," adding that European governments must maintain their resolve until the war ends.
